The Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation has a land base of 2,820,751 acres within
two counties Ziebach and Dewey that is composed of mixed grass prairie. Our land base
is one of the largest intact grasslands left in the United States.
The prairie ecosystem is a diverse and amazing environment, The Prairie Management
Program goals has been to improve the prairie ecosystem of the reservation boundaries
and decrease overgrazing of range units, also to restore and maintain the ecosystem
back to its natural state. Our program is an example of integrating Native American
values with scientific
techniques to promote the restoration of our prairie lands.
